room temperature check

What is temperature?

Temperature refers to the degree of hot or coldness in a body, substance, or place. The Celsius scale and Fahrenheit scale are two different ways that people measure how hot or cold something is. Temperature can be measured with an instrument called a thermometer which shows what the current air temperature is on a scientific-looking dial. However, you don’t need one to estimate the temperature in your room without a thermometer because there are many things you could do instead! For example, if it's sunny outside, then it will be hotter outside than inside so if your windows are closed this means that the air inside should be warmer than outside too.

If you're interested in knowing the temperature but don't own a thermometer, you will require a different method like room temperature now.

What is the temperature in your room without a thermometer

To estimate the temperature in your room without a thermometer, look and see if the sun is shining and your windows are closed. If they are, then the temperature in your room without a thermometer will be cooler than outside. So if this is the case, it means that the air temperature inside should be lower than outside.

How to estimate the temperature in your room without a thermometer

How do you know what the temperature is in your room without a thermometer? There are many ways to guess or estimate the temperature in your room without a thermometer. For example, if it's sunny outside and there are no open windows, then the air inside will be cooler than outside. If this is the case, we know that the air is warmer outside because it feels warmer when we go into the sun. That means that the air temperature in your room should be lower than outside.

Tips and tricks for estimating the temperature in your room

Here are some tips and tricks that you can use to estimate the temperature in your room without a thermometer:

Whether it's hotter outside than inside, the temperature is always higher near an open window. If there is a fan in the room, then the air circulation will also be better and so will the temperature.  Also, if there are no curtains over the window, then the temperature will be even lower than if it were covered with curtains.

Compare the feeling of fresh air coming into a room from an open door to your skin with that of stale air. If you feel cooler when the door is open and warmer when it is closed, then it must mean that temperatures have changed. The higher temperature difference between air inside and outside the room leads to more fresh air coming in compared to stale air leaving through the same exit point (the open door). This phenomenon leads to better ventilation and therefore lower temperatures inside compared to outside.

To calculate shadows on walls, get someone else to stand out in front of a spot where the sun shines through a window. Then look at the wall. The longer the shadow, the warmer it is outside, whereas the shorter it is, the cooler it must be inside. Keep in mind though that you must consider how tall or short your helper is to get an accurate estimate of how long and at what angle their shadow will fall on a wall compared to yours if you also stood alongside them outside.

Conclusion

In conclusion, just like our thirst, we can feel temperature through changes in skin sensations such as warmth or coldness without actually needing a thermometer to tell us so. Perhaps besides having a thermometer there are some other ways for measuring changes in temperature available around us even without having special instruments?
